The oranges are cheap. Do you have deflation there?

路人甲:
ReplyDeleteThank you for actually reading my post. I don't think there is deflation in NY. But you are right the oranges aren't expensive. I think sometimes in supermarket they can go as cheap as 6 for $1 I think. But in the city, in a non supermarket like the one here I think 4 for $1 is reasonable.
Are you allowed to pick and choose?

Yea. I don't think there is any one place you can't pick and choose your own fruits.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is and it is in Hong Kong.

When fruit vendors in Hong Kong put their fruits in clusters of 4 or 5 or 6 for HK$10 or HK$12 etc, buyers are allowed to inspect visually which cluster they want to buy and tell the vendors that. Buyers are not allowed to pick and choose or even touch the fruits before they make up their minds. This is regarded as a trade practice in the fruit-selling market at the consumer level or street level. That's why 路人甲 asked you the above question. If fruit vendors do not put their fruits in clusters, buyers are generally allowed to pick and choose the ones they like but very often picking and choosing are frowned upon by fruit sellers in Hong Kong.
