China apparently pulled a Milli Vanilli in the Opening Ceremony. 9-year old cutie pie Lin Miaoke, above left, became instant sweet heart of the nation and a sensation around the world when she performed "Hymn to the Motherland." Well she might be actually singing, but the voice heard around the world was actually provided by Yang Peiyi who seemingly has a voice that can sing to the world but a face that's better kept unseen, of course, arbitrarily decided by some omni powerful big wig from the China Politburo.
Well, there you have it. Lie committed in the best interest of our beloved nation. The way to hell is paved with good intention.
Now for fuck sake, let the 7-year old Yang sing at the closing ceremony. Oh, never mind, it's reported that both girls were happy with the arrangement. So there is really no outrage ... except maybe we feel a bit cheated. But I guess I should have known better. This is a land that gives us fake Louis Vuitton, toothpaste, medicine and what have you.

I have warned our respected Professor S several times, personally I don't mind the sweet voices from the months of girls, whether they are genuine or fake
ReplyDeleteThanks for the Milli Vanilli reference (I learn more and more about 80's Western pop music from your blog). I was only reminded of some Cantopop stars when I heard about this.
ReplyDeleteThat little girl with the angelic voice was actually quite cute also. Or they could have just let the pretty girl sing and be done with it. Who cares if she was slightly off-pitch? It's meant to be a child's singing after all. Haven't they heard of "authentic charm"?
However I now realise why the singing girl was only named as "a typical Chinese school child" according to the BBC narrator during the Opening Ceremony when she was going through the run-down list of appearance... I guess the producers couldn't bring themselves to just name either girl so just left the official title as generic as possible.
Together with the fake footprint fireworks, it just goes to show that Perfect really can be the enemy of Good. When would the Mainland realise that being genuine is always better than being superficially perfect, whether we're talking about business, or art, or indeed people?
Western civilization is safe now. China maybe rich and collects more Gold medals than any other nations but we now have the moral upper hand.
ReplyDeleteHonesty good, fakery bad. We win.
