Olympics Fever

An Olympic without scandals and controversies wouldn't be called an Olympic. The New York Times now have a dedicated section for this year's Beijing Olympics.

The latest controversy is China maybe pushing girls with baby teeth and in diapers to compete in the Women's Gymnastics events. The athletes in question are He Kexin and Jiang Yuyuan, both are believed to be under aged and yet have passports to prove they are indeed 16, the minimum age for the Olympics. Note He is actually a she here, see pictures from the New York Times.

  1. Yes, people like scandals and controversies, that's why 八卦雜誌 and 狗仔隊 can survive well. China tries to turn the medias to be more positive by promoting their 3 Olympics Superstars : 劉翔,郭晶晶,姚明. My mum told me 劉翔's daily meal just includes shrimp, crab & sea cucumber. The later is extremely good for health. Unfortunately,I don't have time to buy some before it's boosted.

  2. Thank you for the insider information, your mom is great.

Wow, that sounds like a meal a slut wants her boyfriend to have. A daily regimen of mighty aphrodisiacs from the sea. That's no good. I hope Li (or Lau) can channel his pent up energy for the right cause or course. poor kiddo.

  3. I think that baby teeth and diapers is a bit much. If the NY Times is right Jiang is turning 15 this year, which makes her only a year too young for the Olympics, and the same age as Shannon Miller was in 1992.

Personally I think the age limits themselves are unfair, but I hate the fact that the Chinese get to send their young one and others don't.

This being said, it's sad because this team of Chinese gymnasts is incredible. The best team they ever had and probably one of the best teams ever. They could legitimately win every Gold medal in Beijing.

In that they have the best Floor/Vault worker (Cheng FEi, she's not under age) Li Shanshan whose the best beam worker. He Kexin the best bars worker, and they without a doubt if they hit, have the best team.

Sad if those girls are too young. I hope that people will still take the time to appreciate these young girls for their amazing skills.

It's important to note that the Chinese have been faking ages for decades and no body compalained. In fact they were known for being inconsistent. Now though they have an amazing team, and that's why people are REALLY complaining. Even though yeaht hem breaking the rules is unfair.

  4. I forgot the Chinese also have a girl Yang Yilin who could conceivably win the All Around title too. Some of Shawn Johnson's tricks might be downgraded in Beijing. And Yang is more consistent than Nastia.

So yeah, a Chinese sweep is likely with this squad.

  5. In HK, now everywhere is those "I love China", or "Beijing Olympic" tee and Polo, they tried to push it to the top heat, actually I don't favor such kind of fever that much exept I sold such tees in my little shop, yesterday, I sold a "I love China" Polo at HK$100, I need to earn some money from such fever, business is business

  6. bekalynn: I think the age requirement is probably to protect the kids from overzealous coaches and government officials who are hell-bent to win medals no matter what. Let's hope that's not the case.

Like every Olympic, there is bound to be scandal before during and after the Games. Man, where is the Olympics ideal? Perhaps it can be found in one of those X-games. Where is the level playing field. Everybody is a freaking cheater. Maybe it's acceptable if you can only cheat every four years.

    wp2007: ... whatever.

  7. lcl, LA experienced 5.4 level earthquake yesterday midnight, how abt NY ? Seems LA hv not experienced such strong ones in past 10 to 15 yrs ! Recently, almost every corners of this world experienced strange &and extreme weather. We just experienced hail in a very shot summer Sunday (day time 31'C to 40'C) in HKG.

Chinese knight errant novels always describe the atmostphere in this way "風雲變色" before a Great Era or a Big event happen. Just perfect to desribe this particular meoment.

More than 15 (?) Billions Chinese in mainland China and oversea are experiencing their complicated feelings : excited, worry, proud of, shamed of ...... waiting that moment "at 8PM of 8th Aug 2008" !

  8. lcl, if you want the photos of Birdnest, water cube, NOCC (National Olympics Convention Centre), send me email. I hv visited our sites (yes, our completed projects)in this April.

The complicated feelings of all our colleagues (HKG, GZ, SHA and BJG) are even more complicated. All technical staff need to standby in listed arenas for whole Aug and Sept until both Olympics end.

Don't blame the BJG cops since we understand well what is the situation in BJG now and their pressure.

I believe in evil as well as common good and proximity trumps similarity. It's wonderful people from all walks of life work together to achieve something grand, like whatever project you are working on or talking about.

You can mail bomb my gmail inbox at laichungleung at gmail dot com if you so desire but I hope not. Some pictures of the bird's nest are great. Thank you.
