Wong Kar Wai's My Blueberry Nights is opening the 2007 Cannes Film Festival on May 16. This is Wong's first English feature film, starring singer-songwriter Norah Jones and Jude Law.
I wonder if the French got tired of Wong's self-indulgent bullshit since "2046."
A movie teaser can be seen here. (just sit tight, the teaser will play after a couple of ads)
UPDATES:
- Here is a Q&A piece from Jonathan Landreth, live from Cannes as reported via Yahoo! news. Wong says, Nights is very different from Spider Man 3. That's news to me.
- "Blueberry" an acquired taste for some by Jonathan landreth. The same can be said for all of Wong's films. Generally speaking, an "acquired taste" can't be good sign.
- 2-star review from Xan Brooks of the Guardian filed on May 17, 2007. So exit poll doesn't seem very promising even for the artsy fartsy set.

I'm gonna watch anything by Wong starring Law. I'm a huge fan of both.
ReplyDeleteThe thing with Wong is he provides something alternative to the mainstream. Law I am not so sure. But I shall remain objective until I saw the movie.
ReplyDeleteSometimes, I do want to accuse Wong being too repetitive for his own good. This maybe a breakout for Wong. And did you see the clip? I think with the cigarette smoking scenes (glam up by Law), it may get an R rating from here. I am not sure if it's going to be effective immediately but there are talks that any cigarette smoking scene would earn a movie an R rating.
Yes, I have. It's superb, both the directorship and the acting.
ReplyDeleteI saw Jude Law for the first time when I watched the Enemy at the Gates [May lent me this flick. I think I recommended this movie to you guys before] and the Cold Mountain, which I saw in Bangkok with Hong Jianing from Taiwan. [At that time I didn't even know his name and the fact that he was hot. It's Jianing who wanted to watch the flick so I obliged.]
After that, I've seen a few more movies starring Law, such as I Love Huckabees [My kids love him a lot after watching the Huckabees.] and the Aviator and All the King's men. I think Jude Law is great. I also want to see The Holiday.
Jude Law came to my notice when he first appeared in Gattaca, the sci-fi starring Hawke and Thurman, who later married and divorced. I never really paid attention to any of his movie. Perhaps he's good, perhaps he's not.
ReplyDeleteSeeing Law with a girl outside of marriage might have something to do with your perception of his performance.
No, it isn't. I heard he's in trouble with his relationship but I wasn't interested in gossip at all.
ReplyDeleteI can't even name his wife or girl-friend or any other women who've been associated with him.
I'd even watched one of Law's earlier movies, eXistenZ, on HK Cable TV's HMC channel.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very yucky film but Law's performance in it was also good.
There's a scene in the movie in which Law and the lead actress were eating in a Chinese Tai Pai Dong-style restaurant. The cook and the waiters all speak Cantonese to each other and guess what, they were also playing Mahjong. It's kinda funny.

I didn't mean it to Law, I was talking about you seeing the movie with another girl other than your wife. I didn't make myself clear.
I heard Law has a small weenie and he likes to screw his baby's nanny.
I don't know where I saw it. It was probably during an elevator ride between floors that I saw a bloomberg comment that the movie was syrupy.
ReplyDeleteAnyway I thought Hawke and Thurman were married for a long time before Law could legally drink beer in a pub.

Vincent:
ReplyDeleteI don't think I came across any bloomberg news on my blueberry nights. the syrupy reference is probably a play on the pie and its plot, I heard it even has a happy ending, a departure of his usual unrequited love. Not sure if that's the case.
