Mid Afternoon Whining
I much prefer a space-less file name. Even you can name your file like "I like a very long file name" in most file systems, but should you? I think the answer is an unequivocal no. It's just easier to work with spaceless file names and you don't with to worry about single or double quoting them. I hate user reader friendly filled with space kind of long file names. I much prefer people using a hyphen or an underscore in place of a blank space. I rather deal with the old 8.3 cryptic DOS file names than space littered file names.

I think filename with non English charater post a much bigger problem.
ReplyDeleteWhen in command line environment, it's just more troublesome to handle those files with spaces. I don't like it one bit.
ReplyDeleteYou are so right, again. I can imagine file names in non English language. I think actually the URL can be rendered in Chinese or something like that. I don't know how it's handled in the filesystem if the names are in Chinese ....
I am re-reading part of Ansel Adams' Camera, hoping to learn something new. I am pretty slow and getting forgetful.
i agree! and though we no longer are limited to having 8 characters file name, i still think succint file names are so much easier to work with. HOWEVER, it's just a headache not knowing what the file is when you're sharing work with others (or picking up work from another colleague who's gone...)
ReplyDeleteabout chinese file names.. sometimes my pc can't even open those files. (ok, time to update my windows...)
In command line environment, tab key is your friend. For handling non english character, your computer's OS's file system need to support the corresponding lanuguage use in the file name. But mine system is different then yours and you just could not open the file. So, I alway stick with english filename.

ReplyDeleteThank you for contributing. Often times I got some files from people and I am frankly annoyed by their user friendliness. I don't like user friendly kind of crap. Just give me something simple. And too many times I told them you can do anything I mean anything with your file or filename BUT if you were to send me files just keep the name in the 8.3 format OR no spaces in between and then nobody really gives a fuck to what I have to say. Everybody is like into descriptive and friendly the longer the better kind of filename, I say fuck that.
PS: Now don't tell me I ever sent you some file with long names ....
Edison Chen used the file name "gil" distinguished from his other pics, as reported by EDC in the court of Canada
