The thingy potruding from victim Kevin Sterne's lap appears in the first picture and enlarged on the bottom picture was a tourniquet which was mistaken as the victim's penis and was so eagerly edited out by some publications, like People magazine (2nd picture) and The New York Post (3rd picture).
