Time
The beleaguered Time is going to launch its redesigned Cover this Friday. The Cover could have said "How The Time Went Wrong. Please give us a second chance ... buy me now" Now do they want to make it look more like The Economist, the weekly magazine that calls itself a newspaper? They even photoshopped the "tear," whatever happend to journalistic standard? Or because it's so obvious and acknowledged that it really doesn't matter? As a z-list blogger, I really don't have a clue.

I don't get it, man. What's the point of buying a magazine if you can get almost everything out of it on the Internet? There are even web-exclusive contents. (I know there are also dead-tree-exclusive contents, too.) I don't think there's anything sacred holding the mag physically.
ReplyDeleteI mean if I don't get it for free, I might buy it when I think it's good and the price is right. I don't really know what's good for the mag itself if most its current contents are distributed for free on the Net. I know the Economist only let cheapies like me to read a tiny portion of the weekly newspaper only.
Times became the US version "Next" Magazine, next year they will put naked women's pictures in the third pages. For me, I read "NEX" magazine almost every week, bought by my wife, not me.
ReplyDeleteThat said, I was tempted to subscribe for a year of the Time magazine the other day because if I go for one year's subscription now, I can go to its website to browse its old copies dating back to the 1920's. When I was at Pembroke state, I used to spend my Saturday afternoons fingering through every copy of the Time magazines as far back as the 1920's. I really enjoyed it. I learned so much. It was enjoyable for a history buff like me. Whatever you guys say about it or badmouthing it these days, I really don't care.

Vincent: Time is losing its direction and dare I say fighting to stay relevant and survive. Good that you can always find something to enjoy and "fingering" thru them, good choice of word ...(UNIX/Linux has finger as a command, evidence that it's created by guys)

Sid Sweet: it's people like Vincent who likes the tactile feel of paper. Print is still a good medium. Just like TV doesn't really kill Radio, they can co-exist. The trick is to find a business model to milk money from.

Business is business, no body smoke but ciagarettes can be sold in good price here, USD1 Playboy can be sold for USD20, different comparative advantages will lead to trade, with free trade all of the consumers will be better off. that's the core value of capitalists, did you ever forget it ?
ReplyDeleteVincent mentioned something I've obviously overlooked - subscribers can search a sizeable archive of reputable articles and news reports. That sounds irresistible to historians, amateur historians and history buffs.
