I want to have some consistency, boyfriend or mother. It's a tear jerker all right. But I don't like it when it mixes the two together.

But we know the song was written by Prince in the 1980s.
Yeah, that's what I am confused or don't like. Is she mourning the loss of her mom or moaning the loss of her lover .... Does it make sense to mix the two? Or am I missing something? I just couldn't make the leap from lover to mom.
